Becky James and Jess Varnish claimed silver and bronze respectively in the sprint at the UCI Track World Cup in Colombia.

The pair qualified comfortably with James fastest before progressing through the heats during the second day of competition.

Their progress was halted by Wai Sze Lee, the Hong Kong rider beating Varnish in the semi-finals before going on to edge out a hard-fought final against James. Varnish got the better of Spaniard Helena Casas in the bronze medal run-off.

Despite missing out on the top step the medals represent another step for the young British pairing as the women's sprint discipline begins life without Victoria Pendleton.

Elsewhere the day did not go to plan for Kian Emadi, the young sprinter crashing out of the first round in the keirin after Italian Francesco Ceci had veered from the sprinters' line.

The Italian was later relegated but Team GB took the decision to pull Emadi out of the repechage to rest him ahead of Saturday's competition.

Elsewhere in the women's omnium Elinor Barker got off to an average start with the flying lap - fourth in the points race the highlight as she ended the first day of competition in ninth.

Isabella King of Australia was the runaway leader of the event at the half-way point on just four points. Welshman Jon Mould was a non-starter in the men's competition due to illness.
