Canticum leaves it late

Shantaram: Disappointed

Canticum swooped in the dying strides to deny the brave Les Beaufs in the Qatar Prix Chaudenay at Longchamp.

Julien Guillochon had made a bold bid from the front aboard outsider Les Beaufs in the Group Two contest and he still held a healthy advantage at the top of the straight, with the chasing group five or more lengths adrift.

With a furlong left to run of the one-mile-and-seven-furlong heat, Les Beaufs was still in front but Gregory Benoist was powering away on Canticum and he passed the front-runner in the last few yards to grab glory.

Tenenbaum kept on for third for Godolphin and trainer Andre Fabre, but British-trained hopes failed to figure in the finish.

Andrew Balding's Mysterious Man was prominent early on before fading out of it while the John Gosden-trained Shantaram never looked like winning.

Lord Grimthorpe, representing the winning owner Khalid Abdullah, said: "He's a very nice, young, progressive horse and he didn't even run until the start of this year.

"I doubt there's much left for him this year apart from the Prix Royal Oak, but he will be a nice Cup horse for next year."

Dermot Weld's Pale Mimosa was also out of the places and jockey Pat Smullen said: "It rode like a good race. The ground was quite holding and I'm not sure it really suited her."
