Newly-crowned Man of Steel Sam Tomkins is confident he will be fit for England's internationals against Wales and France despite his recent knee injury.

The Wigan full-back missed his side's Super League play-off semi-final defeat to Leeds last Friday after hurting his knee in the Warriors' opening tie against Catalan Dragons.

But he has been included by England coach Steve McNamara in a 24-man squad which will head to South Africa next week for a 10-day high-altitude training camp ahead of the autumn internationals on October 27 and November 3.

St Helens hooker James Roby, who lost out to Tomkins in the voting for Man of Steel, is being rested after an gruelling season season but Tomkins said he was never likely to follow suit.

"That was never a temptation. I'm proud to play for my country and I'll jump at any opportunity," the 23-year-old said.

"In our sport you don't get to represent your country that many times so you can't afford to miss opportunities like this.

"We're building as an international side. We've got a World Cup next year that we want to win and we've got to have the best preparation possible. The games against Wales and France are a vital part of that."

Leeds prospect Zak Hardaker, who was named young player of the year at the Man of Steel awards, is ready to deputise at full-back but Tomkins believes he will be able to return in time.

He added: "I picked up a bang in the Catalan game and couldn't get it quite right for the Leeds game, which was a shame.

"But we've got a few weeks before the internationals so hopefully it will be right."
