Dustin Johnson responded to the sea of blue on the Ryder Cup scoreboard to put the first singles point on the board for the United States after a 3&2 win over Nicolas Colsaerts.

The battle of the power hitters was in the balance until Johnson reeled off three straight wins from the 14th to get the better of the erratic Belgian.

Colsaerts, so impressive in Friday's fourballs, three-putted the first green before recovering with two nerve-settling pars before Johnson got into trouble at the fourth and conceded.

But the American hit back with a lengthy birdie putt to win the sixth, although Colsaerts converted a wedge to three feet at the ninth as they turned all square.

However, Colsaerts made a disastrous start to the back nine when he missed a three-footer to win the 10th and then blocked the return to gift the lead back to Johnson.

He found trouble at the next and could not save par, but Johnson then started to falter as he bogeyed the next two holes.

But the American reclaimed the lead with a good four at the long 14th, and he rolled in another birdie putt at the next before wrapping up victory with a solid par at 16.
