Aidan O'Brien claimed his twelfth success in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes as Battle Of Marengo took the feature on the Curragh card.
The race had reduced to a field of four following the defection of Kingston Jamaica and the son of Galileo was predictably sent off a short-priced favourite on his bid for a third victory of the season.
Despite getting warm in the preliminaries, the colt showed plenty of resolution in the testing conditions, and having come to dispute the lead with Orgilgo Bay with two furlongs to travel, he picked up willingly for Joseph O'Brien's urgings to extend and he saw out the stiff mile accordingly.
Orgilgo Bay ran a fine race to fill the runner-up spot, three and a half lengths adrift of the winner, with Probably and Muaanid third and fourth respectively.
O'Brien snr said "You'd have to be delighted with that, especially considering Joseph said he hated the ground.
"He'd be a possible for the race in Doncaster (Racing Post Trophy), although he's done plenty this year and he doesn't need to run again."
