Chester: Hurdles trial

Donald McCain will head to Chester on Monday with a team of around eight horses for the much talked about trial into the possibility of staging jumps races at the course.

The management at the Roodee are mulling the prospect of running hurdle races around the famously tight circuit and McCain will assist them by taking some of his string to school over four flights.

The trial will also be attended by a representative of the British Horseracing Authority, as well as a number of jockeys, including Cheltenham Gold Cup-winner Andrew Thornton and his weighing room colleague Richie McGrath, who will be in attendance in their roles as jockeys' safety officers.

McCain said: "We haven't finalised things yet but I think we're taking eight horses. We're just taking a few of the more forward ones.

"It should be an interesting day. It's just a small step but it will be interesting to see how the course rides.

"A number of jockeys are coming to have a look at things, so we'll see how it goes."

Chester's clerk of the course Andrew Morris will be watching events with intrigue.

He said: "It's going to be a low-key affair. I think Donald McCain is bringing eight horses and they'll be ridden by various jockeys, some from within Donald's yard and some from outside I believe.

"I think they'll work over a distance of around two miles and we're setting up four flights of hurdles, which they'll jump twice, so they'll jump eight in all.

"It's the start of a process and it will be good to get feedback from horseman about how they see the course."
