Jonathan Schmid had put Freiburg ahead
Werder Bremen continued their dominance over Freiburg with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory that earned three crucial points in the Bundesliga.
Jonathan Schmid gave Freiburg the lead in the 36th minute before Joseph Akpala equalised three minutes after the break.
But Freiburg could not find a suitable response after Aaron Hunt earned Werder victory with a goal in the 59th minute.
Werder have not lost at Freiburg since July 2001 and duly ended a seven-game winless streak on the road to climb to seventh place.
Freiburg, though, witnessed the end of what had been a 10-match unbeaten run at their Mage Solar Stadion home.
Eljero Elia appeared to have given Bremen the lead after 11 minutes but Akpala was ruled offside in the build-up.
Freiburg were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position in the 36th minute and Schmid capitalised, striking over the wall and into the top-left corner to give Freiburg the lead.
The hosts nearly doubled their advantage one minute after the break but Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz got down to push Max Kruse's shot onto a post.
Bremen equalised in the 48th minute, Marko Arnautovic crossing Elia's pass into the middle for Akpala to slot past Oliver Baumann.
Werder took the lead in the 59th minute as Kevin de Bruyne played a fine ball through to Hunt, who blasted past Baumann to make it 2-1.
The visitors appeared to have scored a third but Sebastian Prodl's goal was disallowed as the defender was ruled to have impeded an opponent.
Four minutes from time, Daniel Caligiuri nicked in behind the Bremen backline only to strike the base of a post, Schmid's free-kick sailing agonisingly wide of the target deep into injury time.
