Sheffield Steelers retained their place at the top of the Elite League after a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over the Belfast Giants on Sunday night.

Colin Shields and Jeff Legue both scored their penalties for the Steelers while Belfast were left to rue misses by Craig Peacock and Scott Champagne.

Ron Sarich, Ashley Tait, Legue and Steven Geortzen had earlier powered Sheffield into a 4-1 lead in normal time, only for Belfast to complete a dramatic comeback in the final period.

Penalty shootouts were also needed in the two other Elite League matches played on Sunday night, where the Fife Flyers claimed a 3-2 win over the Coventry Blaze and the Edinburgh Capitals were 4-3 victors over the Hull Stingrays.

Nottingham Panthers paid the penalty in Challenge Cup action as they lost a thrilling Group B encounter 6-5 at Cardiff Devils.

In Group A, Dundee Stars edged out Braehead Clan 2-1 in normal time.
