Martin Klizan claimed the first ATP Tour title with of his career after recording a 6-2 6-3 win over Fabio Fognini at the St Petersburg Open

The Slovakian broke his fourth-seeded opponent twice in the opening set, which he wrapped up with his only ace of the match.

The second set was a topsy-turvy affair but the Slovak third seed prevailed with four breaks of serve, sealing victory with a cross-court forehand winner.

The 23-year-old is in the form of his life having reached a career high No 45 in the world after progressing to fourth round at the US Open by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

"I was really dead yesterday after the match (a three-set win over Mikhail Youzhny), but I played very solid this week and I'm very happy that I won this week," Klizan said.

"It's my first title and I hope not last, and I hope I can make more points in the end of this season."

Fognini added: "To play a final like this, it's sorry, especially for me. I didn't play my best tennis for sure today."
