Fergie pleased to get win

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased to claim his 100th UEFA Champions League win and in the end was relieved to see his side beat Galatasaray 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick scored the only goal of the game after just seven minutes, with Nani missing the chance to make it two after seeing his second-half penalty saved by Fernando Muslera.

But for Ferguson the scoreline was not as important as the final result and opening their Champions League campaign with a win.

He told Sky Sports 4HD: "I think we expected a tough game. Galatasaray have a lot of experience.

"In the first half we kept giving ball away and we let them counter-attack. But second half we were much more solid at the back, they never made any chances and we could have scored four or five.

Penalty miss

"But it was a good open game and good, old European game. They were confident in their play and possession and you get that with these European teams and that is not a problem, you just have to be patient - and with the chances we missed we kept ourselves on the edge.

"Getting three points first is the most important thing - three points is important and with Cluj beating Braga it sets up a really interesting game."

With Nani missing a second-half penalty, that is now three in total with Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez also failing this term.

And Ferguson quipped: "I don't want a penalty!

"Miss one and it knocks you back, you miss it and you start to worry about losing a goal."
