David Price would love to fight Vitali Klitschko - but it's not in his plans

David Price says he would fight Vitali Klitschko tomorrow - but admits it would come too soon in his fledgling career.

The British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion was far from impressed by Klitschko's stoppage victory over Manuel Charr last weekend.

It was a further indication that the WBC belt holder's abilities are on the wane, and that a career in politics is next on the agenda.

Price has joined fellow Briton David Haye in hoping for a clash with the elder Klitschko but the Liverpudlian knows it isn't on the cards.

"Watching that fight, if I got that call to fight Vitali Klitschko tomorrow we'd take it, but it's not about that," he said earlier this week.

"My career is not about the Klitschkos - it's about doing the right thing at the right time. I'm with a man who has done it all before in Frank Maloney and he's going to guide me down the right path.

"My trainer's got a big say on the path we're taking and we've not put a foot wrong so far."

Maloney confirmed a world title fight is not on the near-term agenda for Price, although a clash with Wladimir could work out for 2014.

"I'm a great believer that the Klitschkos are ready to be taken but it's about the right time and the right deal," said the veteran promoter.

"If the call did come I'd sit down with David and we'd talk it through, but I'd advise him not to take it because we're not the mandatory and we'd be locked into a contract, and that's not the way to do business.

"I think in 18 months he'll be a mandatory for the world title so then we'll make our move. It's about being in the right place at the right time."

Price makes the first defence of his British and Commonwealth titles against Audley Harrison at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on October 13.
