Coventry Blaze have been dealt another injury blow with the news Russell Cowley faces an indefinite spell on the sidelines.

The 29-year-old Great Britain international ruptured a medial collateral ligament during last Saturday's Rapid Solicitors Elite League win at Dundee Stars.

Assistant captain Cowley, in his 11th season at the Skydome having made more than 600 appearances for the club, will now have surgery as soon as possible.

Coach Paul Thompson said: "Russ is absolutely distraught. He is our most experienced Brit and you cannot replace him.

"We made him an assistant captain and he was so looking forward to this season. But we will keep him around the group and keep him involved.

"We have now lost Russ and Jerramie Domish to long-term injuries and they are both key players for us.

"But we have started well with a short-bench and the guys are good professionals, we will just have to get through this tricky period as best we can."
