Ireland winger James McClean has apologised to Giovanni Trapattoni for Twitter rant

James McClean: Will not be axed after apologising for his reaction to not getting on the pitch against Kazakhstan

Giovanni Trapattoni will allow James McClean to stay in the Republic of Ireland squad after the winger apologised for his foul-mouthed tweet.

McClean was furious that Trapattoni did not bring him off the bench as the Republic struggled to a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan on Friday.

In what appeared to be a swipe at Trapattoni, the Sunderland winger tweeted: "Delighted as a fan we got the the win.. Personal level fuming £f****njoke £embarrassing."

The 23-year-old soon deleted the remarks after speaking to his team-mates and Trapattoni, and he returned to the website to apologise on Saturday afternoon.

McClean wrote: 'i apologise for my tweet last night, it was stupid, disrespectful and i let my frustration get the better of me which still aint an excuse."

Trapattoni then also spoke to McClean in front of the whole squad before the player apologised to his team-mates in the room.

The 73-year-old Italian coach had considered dropping the player but he will now retain the former Derry City man for Ireland's friendly against Oman at Craven Cottage on Tuesday.

But Trapattoni is not free from the spotlight himself with the incident raising further concerns about his relationship with some of his players.

Damien Duff and Shay Given retired this summer, Darron Gibson refused a call-up for these games and Kevin Foley has not played since claiming he was "betrayed" ahead of Euro 2012.
