Last year's winner Pepper Lane retained her William Hill Great St Wilfrid title when bouncing back to form at Ripon on Saturday.

The five-year-old mare was last on her last two starts, including when 28th of 28 in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

However, the return to Ripon worked the oracle as she bounded clear of her rivals to win the feature race by one-and-a-half lengths at odds of 20-1.

Tax Free (20-1) was second with Louis The Pious (8-1) third and Captain Ramius (20-1) fourth.

O'Meara said: "This year has been very tricky. "She kept missing the break, so we had no idea whether she was in form or not.

"She was giving her race away at the start.

"We've done a lot of work with her.

"I don't know if the hood helped or not. They have become quite popular of late and it hasn't done her any harm.

"A lot of credit has to go to the lads at home.

"She is very good on her day and she loves it here."
