Draw seals Sri Lanka success

Sri Lanka resisted the temptation of chasing 270 on day five as the final Test against Pakistan ended in a draw at Pallekele.

The stalemate seals a 1-0 win for Sri Lanka - their first Test series triumph since August 2009 - after victory in Galle and a rain-hit draw in Colombo.

Set a target of 270 to win in 71 overs, the hosts were 195-4 in their second innings when the two sides shook hands on a draw with nine overs remaining.

Sri Lanka made a positive start to their chase and were 132-1 after 37.1 overs, however when Dinesh Chandimal (65) and Mahela Jayawardene (11) fell to Saeed Ajmal, the hosts aborted the run-chase.

Support

Ajmal (3-50) continued to cast his spell, removing Thilan Samaraweera (10) cheaply, but the prolific Kumar Sangakkara ensured there would be no collapse and saw his side to a draw.

Sangakkara finished unbeaten on 74 and in doing so ended the three-match series with a batting average of 163.33.

Resuming the final day on 299-8, Pakistan added 81 to their second innings without the loss of a wicket, allowing Asad Shafiq - given able support by No.10 Adnal Akmal (35no) - to reach his century in 195 balls.

Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq called his batsmen in as soon as Shafiq nudged Rangana Herath for a single to bring up his second Test hundred.

Pakistan will next be in action against Australia, where they will contest three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches in the United Arab Emirates.
