Tiger closes to within eight wins of Sam Snead on all-time list

Tiger Woods became the first man to win three times on the PGA Tour this year with a two-shot victory in the AT&T National in Maryland. The 36-year-old American shot a closing two-under-par 69 at Congressional to win by two shots from Bo Van Pelt. Woods' win takes him clear of Jack Nicklaus and second on his own in the all-time list of PGA Tour winners with 74 career titles. Sam Snead still leads the way with 82. Woods, who teed-off on Sunday one stroke off the pace, overhauled his fellow American Van Pelt, who had led by one early on the back nine. The pair were locked at eight under on 16, but Woods holed a clutch five-footer for par and Van Pelt missed his 10-foot par putt.

Incredible

Woods offset a single bogey with three birdies and clinched victory with a routine par four at the difficult 18th, as Van Pelt dropped another shot after failing to get up and down. Woods' other wins this season also came on tough venues - Bay Hill and Muirfield Village. Australian Adam Scott carded a joint best-of-day 67 to finish third, while overnight leader Brendon de Jonge - playing in the final group alongside Woods and Van Pelt - slipped out of the top 10 following a 77. Woods said: "What an incredible week. Everybody, thank you for being patient with us. Yesterday was a silent day. I think everyone saved up for today. What an atmosphere to play in front of." Woods immediately targeted more tournament wins after passing Nicklaus on the PGA list. "I've had a pretty good career," he said. "To do it at 36, I feel like I have a lot of years ahead of me. "I've had a number of good years in my career so far, and I feel like I've got a lot more ahead of me."
