Saul Alvarez: Without an opponent once again
Golden Boy Promotions insist WBC light-middleweight champion Saul Alvarez will keep his date at the MGM Grand on September 15.
'Canelo' was due to fight Victor Ortiz on Mexican independence day but the American suffered a broken jaw in losing to Josesito Lopez at the weekend.
The Alvarez-Ortiz match-up was happening two miles down the road from the huge clash between Julio Cesar Chavez jnr and Sergio Martinez in Las Vegas on a different pay-per-view network.
But while Alvarez is currently without an opponent Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer maintains the date will stick.
"What I know for sure is that 'Canelo' Alvarez will be fighting on September 15 from the MGM Grand," he said.
"What we are going to be doing next week with the matchmakers and Canelo's team is evaluating different options, and we are looking at three possible names."
Two names rumoured to be in the frame are Carlos Quintana and WBA champion Austin Trout, while former light-welterweight champ Marcos Maidana has also thrown his hat in the ring.
"All I say is they are looking for a fight for Canelo and I want Canelo," he told boxingscene. "I told that to Oscar De La Hoya last night.
"Styles make fights and it would be a war. I like a challenge."
It is the third time Alvarez has been left without an opponent after fights with James Kirkland and Paul Williams also fell by the wayside.
