Stevenson was a three-time Olympic champion

Three-time Olympic heavyweight champion Teofilo Stevenson has died at the age of 60, according to reports. The Cuban was considered one of the greatest ever fighters never to turn professional, having won gold medals at Munich in 1972, Montreal in 1976 and then in Moscow in 1980. A hotly-anticipated bout against Muhammad Ali was touted following his success in Canada but the fight never took place after he refused to relinquish his amateur status. Stevenson went on to coach the next generation of Cuban boxers before serving on the board of the Cuban Boxing Federation. A statement carried by Latin American news station TeleSUR read: "The Cuban boxer Teofilo Stevenson, one of the leading boxers in the history of amateur boxing, died Monday at the age 60 of a heart attack. The outstanding athlete won the Olympic gold medal three times."
