England have called up Surrey wicketkeeper Steven Davies on the eve of the third Test against the West Indies due to concerns over Matt Prior's fitness.

Prior is struggling with an eye infection and may be forced to miss the final match of the series at Edgbaston, which is live on Sky Sports.

England do already have another wicketkeeper in the squad in Jonathan Bairstow, though it appears they prefer to field the Yorkshireman as a frontline batsman only.

Davies has yet to make his Test debut but has played in eight one-dayers and five Twenty20 games for his country, with his last appearance coming in a 50-over fixture against Australia at Perth in February 2011.

The 25-year-old was summoned from county action, having scored six on the opening day of his side's LV= County Championship clash with Sussex at Horsham. He will be released on Thursday morning if he is not required in Birmingham, allowing him to return to play for Surrey.

Prior took part in practice sessions with the rest of the England squad on both Tuesday and Wednesday and it is hoped he will be fit to win his 55th Test cap.

He has not missed a match since he flew home from the Caribbean during the 2009 tour for the birth of his child and was absent for the Test in Barbados.

"I expect to be fine to play tomorrow. The management have got cover in as a precaution on the off chance my vision is affected!" Prior said on Twitter on Wednesday evening.
