Andrew Strauss admits Stuart Broad has a chance of playing in the final Test against the West Indies, while defending the decision to rest Jimmy Anderson.

With the series already won, England's management have decided to rest Anderson, their pace spearhead and current player of the year.

A decision will be taken on Broad on Thursday morning as Strauss seeks to manage his resources the best he can.

Speaking on the eve of the third Test at Edgbaston, the England skipper told Sky Sports News: "You are always making decisions as to what your starting 11 is going to be.

"Stuart's obviously in the 12 so he's got a chance of playing.

"But clearly Jimmy Anderson's missed out on this one and with good reason.

"It's obviously a tough thing for any player not to play in a Test match but with the schedules as they are in international cricket, from a management point of view, you've got to manage your resources cleverly.

Opportunity presented

"And this is obviously one of those occasions where an opportunity's presented itself and we all think it's prudent that we take the opportunity with Jimmy and hopefully that will allow him to be fresh for the rest of the summer and beyond."

He added: "I think the idea of rotating and resting is that you end up with them playing more and not less.

"The last thing you want is someone to be playing to the extent that they're dead on their feet and then get injured and are out for months.

"That's what we're trying to avoid and by missing the odd game here and there hopefully that'll allow that not to happen."

When pressed regarding Broad's inclusion, he said: "It's a possibility. I think when it comes down to selecting a side we always do it in the morning.

"It's obviously a tough thing for any player not to play in a Test match but with the schedules as they are in international cricket, from a management point of view, you've got to manage your resources cleverly."
Andrew Strauss Quotes of the week

"As I said, Stuart's in the squad of 12 and he's played a full part in the series so far and he's obviously going to have a chance of playing."

In Anderson's absence, Steven Finn and Graham Onions have both been included in England's 12-man squad.

Strauss added: "One of them will get the opportunity at least and I'm sure whoever gets the opportunity will be keen to take it."
