West Indies captain Darren Sammy has been fined 80 percent of his match fee for his team's slow over-rate during the defeat to England in the first Test.

The tourists fell four overs short of their target by the International Cricket Council at Lord's, meaning a 40 percent fine for all the players in the team.

However the captain is made to pay double for the breach, whilst Sammy now runs the risk of serving a one-match ban if he is found guilty again of a slow over-rate offence in the next 12 months.

"In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct regulations governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount," a statement from the ICC read.

"As such, Sammy was fined 80 per cent of his match fee while his players received 40-per-cent fines.

"If Sammy is found guilty of one more minor over-rate offence in Tests over the next 12 months, he will receive a one-match suspension as per the provisions of the ICC Code of Conduct."

Gayle forecast?

Sammy will, however, be free to lead West Indies in the second match at Trent Bridge - a game which could see the visitors boosted by Chris Gayle.

The opening batsman has been in dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board but with his Indian Premier League commitments now over, it is possible the sides could find a resolution in time for the player to feature in Nottingham.

"As a team, we welcome anyone selected to play for the West Indies," Sammy said after the five-wicket defeat in the series opener.

"They all come into the family, and we welcome anyone who gets selected.

"It's up to the selectors. The last I heard, he was available for the T20s and ODIs.

"If he makes himself available, the selectors will act accordingly."
