West Indies sprang a surprise this morning by resting their captain Darren Sammy against England Lions, their last match before next week's first Test.

Sammy, who has not batted or bowled on tour yet thanks to the rain which reduced the West Indies' opening three-day tour match to just 34 overs at Hove, has no injury.

But a team spokesman confirmed he will not be playing in this four-day fixture at Northampton, the tourists instead led by vice-captain Kirk Edwards.

There was good news for the Windies, with the arrival at last of all-rounder Narsingh Deonarine - the last of three squad members to overcome travel issues which delayed journeys to England.

Deonarine was reported to have flown in this morning, but not in time to take part in this match.

Strike bowler Fidel Edwards was fit after his back "niggle", however.

Heavy overnight rain delayed the start at Wantage Road. But dry conditions greeted the players - and after a 10.45am inspection, it was announced the match would get under way at 12pm.

The Lions, who left out left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan and therefore chose a four-man seam attack, won the toss and elected to field.
