Adrian Barath: Looking to adapt to English conditions

West Indies opener Adrian Barath admits he will have to learn fast after a disappointing start to his tour of England.

The talented 22-year-old was one of the two wickets to fall in the 18 overs so far of their rain-affected match with Sussex.

Barath was freakishly bowled by a ball which trickled off the bottom of his thigh-pad on to the base of leg stump - with the Windies left on 46-2.

And Barath knows he has plenty of work to do if he is to help the West Indies top order confound expectations against England's seamers in the forthcoming three-Test series.

He said: "I was a bit unlucky, but the time I was out there I felt really good.

"I'm working on playing the ball a bit later (in English conditions), leaving a lot more balls.

Adrian Barath Quotes of the week

"It's about learning fast, and I have a lot of responsibility."

Learning

Barath made an immediate impact on the Test stage with a century on debut against Australia at Brisbane.

However after 12 Tests Barath knows it is time to start delivering on that early promise.

"Over the past year or so, I haven't really had the sort of performances I'd like," he said.

"But I'm going to have to put that behind me."

The example set by West Indies' world number one batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul is one Barath is naturally eager to follow.

"It's all about learning from my mistakes in the past, and building from it, and learning from team-mates like Shivnarine Chanderpaul about these conditions," he said.

"He's played a lot of cricket here, scored a lot of runs and has a lot to offer."
