Phil Jaques has been cleared by the England and Wales Cricket Board to play for Yorkshire as a non-overseas player for the next two seasons, clearing the way for the Tykes to sign Mitchell Starc.

Jaques' agreement with the ECB means the former Australia opener will not be allowed to play state cricket Down Under again.

But it is good news for Yorkshire who can now sign an overseas player with Starc, currently in the Caribbean with Australia's Test squad, their target.

Left-arm seamer Starc's arrival is likely to be delayed as injuries to Peter Siddle and James Pattinson mean he may be required for the third Test next week.

Jaques has a British passport because his father is from Sheffield and his late mother from Manchester.

"Basically it's no more cricket in Australia, although I can play club cricket," he said.

"I could theoretically play as an overseas, but the rules over there state that I won't be able to do that because I've got an Australian passport. If you've got an Australian passport, you're viewed as Australian back home.

"It will be playing here and then going over in the winter to play club cricket."
