Manchester United defender Jonny Evans admitted Fulham could have been awarded a penalty after the home side's narrow win at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game three minutes before the break to fire United three points clear at the top of the table.

However, the main talking point was the failure of referee Michael Oliver to award Fulham a penalty late on after Michael Carrick appeared to fell Danny Murphy inside the box.

Evans, who impressed in central defence for United, admitted they rode their luck with the penalty call.

"You have a quick look to the referee but he's waved it away," Evans told Sky Sports HD1.

"Having seen it back again you accept he could have given it."

Evans was pleased with the result but not the performance which was below United's best.

"It's a great result for us but were a bit disappointed with the performance," he continued.

"We managed to grind out a 1-0 victory and that puts us top again."
