Richard Levi: Selectors say 'his time will come'

South Africa have opted against adding Richard Levi to their squad for the upcoming three-match one-day series against New Zealand.

Levi's record-breaking century in the second Twenty20 International between the sides in Hamilton, where he reached three figures in just 45 balls and smashed 13 sixes, left calls for the right-hander to be added to the one-day set-up.

"He is an exciting prospect for us and he will be monitored and nurtured accordingly. His time will come."

Convenor of selectors Andrew Hudson, however, revealed that the 24-year-old will head home at the end of the T20I series as scheduled.

"Levi's batting performance was fantastic - one of the best I have watched," said Hudson.

"We hope that he can continue in the same way for the Cape Cobras in the T20 Challenge back home.

"He is an exciting prospect for us and he will be monitored and nurtured accordingly. His time will come."

Levi will return to South Africa along with seamer Rusty Theron and left-handed batsman Colin Ingram, while former captain Graeme Smith, all-rounder Jacques Kallis, middle-order batsman Faf du Plessis and fast bowler Dale Steyn will soon join the team in New Zealand for the three ODIs.

"We are delighted with the way the T20I squad has progressed throughout this series and it is exciting to see the momentum that is being built for the remainder of the series," added Hudson.

"It has been encouraging to see how the youngsters like Richard and Marchant de Lange have stepped up to the challenges of international cricket, ahead of a very important year for the squad."

The third and final T20I will take place in Auckland on Wednesday, while the first ODI gets under way in Wellington on Saturday.
