Gibbs will rejoin Dynamos veteran Paul Collingwood after the duo helped the Perth Scorchers reach the final of the Big Bash League in Australia.

The 37-year-old, who has not played for South Africa in two years, was voted the second-best player of the tournament after smashing 302 runs at an average of 43.

The right-hander revealed he was looking forward to returning to England, after playing for Yorkshire in the tournament two years ago, to bolster a Dynamos side that reached the quarter-finals last season.

"Durham are really committed to their on-field development and have real ambitions to progress in T20, which is what attracted me to the club," Gibbs said.

"There is some massive talent in the dressing room and I can't wait to see what we can achieve.

"I've been performing pretty well in the T20 format and I think I can offer some real variation to the side.

"I'm looking forward to my experience contributing to plenty of Durham wins."

Gibbs is one of the top scorers in Twenty20 history, having amassed 3,050 runs, and has become a gun for hire since his international career ended.

After appearing in the Big Bash he is also due to play in the Indian Premier League as well as the Bangladesh and South African leagues in addition to Durham this year.

"It is a real coup for us to be able to bring a player of Herschelle's calibre to our set-up for the t20 competition," head coach Geoff Cook said.

"It just goes to show that Durham's reputation as a progressive and successful club can attract quality players who want to help us win trophies.

"I'm excited by the prospect of having Herschelle in our team and I'm confident that he will add an extra dimension to our batting line-up and some real personality out there in the middle."
