Albie Morkel has been recalled to the South Africa squad for their five-game one-day series against Sri Lanka.

The all-rounder replaces uncapped Dean Elgar in the 14-man party after Elgar's withdrawal with a knee injury.

Morkel, 30, has scored 679 runs in his 51 ODIs and last represented his country in the 50-over format when he turned out against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in November 2010.

Elgar was injured during a domestic four-day game and it is feared he has suffered ligament damage that will need surgery.

The first game of the series takes place in Paarl on 11 January.

South Africa squad Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, AB de Villiers (capt), JP Duminy, Francois du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe
