Somerset have signed South African seam bowler Vernon Philander as their overseas player for the first two months of the 2012 season.

Philander, 26, took 14 wickets in two Tests against Australia in November and is a useful lower-order batsman.

"His all-round ability will be a great asset in our side and I'm sure our supporters will be engaged by his infectious personality."
Brian Rose Quotes of the week

"Watching Vernon bowl in Cape Town against Australia recently I was immediately impressed by his ability and character in an especially demanding debut on his home ground," Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose said on the county's official website.

"His all-round ability will be a great asset in our side and I'm sure our supporters will be engaged by his infectious personality."

Philander's deal with Somerset is subject to his possible participation in the IPL.
