Conor O'Shea feels in-form Harlequins have given themselves a "nice base" ahead of their return to the Heineken Cup.

The capital club have started the season in sensational fashion, with Saturday's 19-13 result at Exeter in Aviva Premiership action seeing them stretch their winning run to nine matches.

"We've a lot of improvement to do as the season progresses, but we've given ourselves a nice base."

They will hope to continue their fine form when they begin their European campaign against Connacht on November 11, with fellow English side Gloucester and Top 14 powerhouses Toulouse also in Pool Six.

Having endured a nightmare experience the last time they were in the competition, losing all six group games two years ago, Quins are determined to do themselves justice this time around.

Confidence game

"You don't take anything for granted. We're not arrogant enough to think we're a good side, far from it," said director of rugby O'Shea at the Heineken Cup season launch at Twickenham.

"We've a lot of improvement to do as the season progresses, but we've given ourselves a nice base.

"Last year we lost a lot of games by less than a score, this year we're coming out on top in those games.

"Rugby is very much like that - it's a confidence game. Our guys have a lot of confidence.

"When are on top we feel we can play a lot of rugby with ball in hand. Or, like we did last weekend against Exeter, we can play with our backs to the wall, digging in and defending heroically.

"We probably only got five or 10 minutes of our game going in the match, but that was enough."

Captain Chris Robshaw admits the players are delighted to be back at the top table in Europe after winning the second-tier Challenge Cup last season.

"Our Premiership and LV Cup= form has been great so far. Hopefully we have a lot of momentum going into this Heineken Cup," he said.

"But it will be another step up playing in the Heineken Cup. We are glad to be back in the competition and really looking forward to it."
