Kevin Pietersen will remain with England's limited-overs squad in India in the hope that he will be fit to play in the one-off Twenty20 international on Saturday.

Pietersen missed the final one-day international with India on Tuesday after fracturing his thumb but the England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed that he will not be flying home.

However, the middle-order batsman will have to come through a fitness test before the 20-over clash at Eden Gardens before being cleared to take part.

The 31-year-old seemed hopeful over his fitness on Wednesday as he gave an update of his condition via his Twitter account.

He wrote: "Bruising going down on the break... #fingerscrossedforT20."

Pietersen also corrected some confusion over how he picked up the injury, confirming that he hurt his thumb while fielding in Sunday's fourth ODI in Mumbai.

Cameras had captured him being hit on the left hand by a stray ball ahead of Tuesday's contest, but that was not when the injury happened.
