Kevin Pietersen was forced to sit out of England's fifth and final one-day international against India with a fractured thumb.

Pietersen injured the end of his left thumb when he tried to take a catch at cover during Sunday's fourth defeat of the series in Mumbai.

He is still hoping to be able to play in Saturday's one-off Twenty20 international, which will conclude England's so far unsuccessful tour.

His team-mates must, however, get by without him on Tuesday as they try to avoid a 5-0 whitewash at Eden Gardens.

England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and chose to bowl first, confirming Ian Bell would replace Pietersen while Graeme Swann returns to the side in place of leg-spinner Scott Borthwick.

India make one change, Manoj Tiwary replacing Parthiv Patel.
