Somerset chased down a target of 162 to beat Kolkata Knight Riders for the second time in four days at the Champions League Twenty20.

Having already overcome the Knight Riders during the qualifying phase, Somerset opened their Group B campaign with a five-wicket success over the same opponents, mainly thanks to Roelof van der Merwe's big-hitting heroics.

The South African, batting at number three, smashed 73 off 40 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, to ensure the required rate was always under control.

He was well supported by opener Peter Trego (28) during a second-wicket stand of 105 - the duo coming together in the second over after the loss of Chris Jones (6).

The run out of Trego prompted a wobble from 120-1 to 141-5 but Nick Compton (19no) and Steve Snell (6no) saw Somerset across the line from the fourth delivery of the final over.

Kolkata had earlier posted a total of 161-3 after opting to bat first in Hyderabad, opener Jacques Kallis batting through for 74 from 61 balls.

Kallis cleared the rope four times, as did Yusuf Pathan (39no) from consecutive balls in a single over by left-arm spinner Arul Suppiah costing 30 runs.
