Australia wing Digby Ioane has been ruled out of the Wallabies' World Cup clash with Ireland on Saturday due to a fractured thumb.

The 26-year-old picked up the injury during the 32-6 Pool C win over Italy after he came into contact with the boot of Mirco Bergamasco when attempting to cover a kick.

Ioane have an operation on the thumb and will remain with the squad in New Zealand, with the Wallabies opting against calling up an injury replacement.

Australia expect him to be available again later in the tournament, but will not set a timetable on his recovery until after the operation.

Ioane was Australia's leading try-scorer during the recent Tri-Nations and also crossed the try-line in the Wallabies opener against Italy.
