Shaun Marsh became the 19th Australian to register a debut century before the tourists' charge was halted by rain on day three against Sri Lanka in Kandy.

Starting the day on 87, Marsh took his time to advance to the landmark, while Hussey, on 76 overnight, was the aggressor as he reached three figures for the 14th time in Tests.

Part-time spinner Thilan Samaraweera (1-7) finally dismissed Hussey for 142 to end the fourth-wicket pair's stand at 258 shortly before lunch.

Marsh departed for 141 after the interval, the first of three wickets to go down in six deliveries as Australia were pegged back from 374-3 to 411-7 in their first innings, a lead of 237, when rain arrived to end play for the day after eight overs of the afternoon session.

Chance

Number three Marsh, only playing in this game as Ricky Ponting has returned to Australia for the birth of his second child, had walked out after lunch looking to become just the seventh Australian to make a score of 150 or more on debut.

But he was nine short of that milestone when he looked to pull seamer Suranga Lakmal (1-102) but played the ball too low and sent an outside edge into the hands of Kumar Sangakkara.

Brad Haddin (1) did not last long, coming down the wicket to his fifth ball from spinner Suraj Randiv (3-103) and failing to get the height to clear Sangakkara at mid-on.

Mitchell Johnson shouldered arms at Randiv's next delivery and was dispatched lbw.

Ryan Harris survived the hat-trick ball and advanced to nine not out when the players left the field, with Usman Khawaja on 13 at the other end.

Australia hold a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after their 125-run victory in Galle last week.
