Second rower Luke Charteris will captain Newport Gwent Dragons next season, the Welsh club confirmed on Wednesday.

The giant lock will miss the opening part of the campaign while on World Cup duty with Wales in New Zealand and Kiwi hooker Tom Willis will stand in as skipper while he is away.

But head coach Darren Edwards believes the 6ft 9in 28-year-old, who joined the Dragons from Llanelli Scarlets in 2003, is the right man to lead his side in the long term.

"Luke's attitude and leadership have been outstanding during his career at the Dragons," said Edwards. "He has a fantastic work ethic and the respect of the whole camp.

"Luke's position here was secured before the Welsh squad for the World Cup was announced.

"Although he is going to be absent for the first few weeks of the season, we were confident that he is the man for the job and are delighted that he will be leading the Dragons this season."
