Conor Murray is still struggling to come to terms with his shock inclusion in Ireland's World Cup squad.

Two years ago he was helping AIB League club team Garryowen escape relegation, but his meteoric rise now sees him among the 30 names that will soon depart for New Zealand.

The 22-year-old only broke into Munster's team this year and made his solitary Test appearance against France in Bordeaux nine days ago.

"It was bit of a surprise to make it at Tomas' expense but it's such a competitive squad, no one can take their place for granted."
Conor Murray Quotes of the week

A beneficiary of Tomas O'Leary's collapse of form - his provincial colleague has been omitted from the squad - his latest achievement has yet to sink in.

"I live with a few of the Munster lads and last night they were trying to shake me to get me excited,'' said Murray.

"I still hadn't really realised what had happened. I'm sure in the next few days I'll understand how big it is.

Fair

"During pre-season (coach) Declan Kidney was very fair with me. He sat me down a few times to let me know where I was in the squad.

"Throughout pre-season I had an idea of where I was. I just didn't expect to get the call.

"It was bit of a surprise to make it at Tomas' expense but it's such a competitive squad, no one can take their place for granted.

"My first start was against the Dragons in March. I was just trying to have a good game. It was the biggest game I'd played at the time.

"I was kept for the next game and that gave me some confidence. I felt I could handle this level and kicked on from there.

"Everything's happened quicker than I expected."
