Clarke: Relishing one-day challenge

Australia captain Michael Clarke admits his team must come to terms with Sri Lanka's spin bowlers if they are to stand a chance of winning the upcoming one-day series.

The Aussies surrendered the Twenty20 series 2-0 after Ajantha Mendis claimed a world record six-wicket haul in the second match in Kandy on Monday.

The five-match 50-over series begins on Wednesday, with Clarke taking over the captaincy from Cameron White and senior batsmen Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey returning to bolster the side.

And Clarke admits: "We will get a lot of spin to face. If we are to win the series we have to play spin well.

Momentum

"If we play our best cricket there is no reason why we can't win the series."

Clarke hailed the performance of unorthodox spinner Mendis, who he described as a "good bowler in all forms of the game."

Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who missed the Twenty20 series through injury, could return for the one-dayers, while opening batsmen Upul Tharanga is also likely to play after serving a suspension for using a banned substance during this year's World Cup.

Chamara Kapugedera and Chamara Silva also return to the squad to strengthen the middle-order.

Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan believes the recent Twenty20 victories will give his side the advantage in the one-day series and the three Test matches that follow.

"It is good to make a winning start against a strong side like Australia and I am sure we can carry the momentum into the one-dayers," said Dilshan, who struck an unbeaten century in the first match.

"The one-dayers will be a lot tougher, but I am confident we will do well."
