Chris Tremlett gave England a scare ahead of the second Test against India when he left training early with a hamstring problem.

The Surrey paceman, who took four wickets during England's 196-run win in the series opener at Lord's, did not train on Wednesday and took only a limited part on Thursday morning at Trent Bridge.

Instead, Tremlett went to receive treatment and, although he returned later in the session, a final decision on his participation will be left until Friday morning.

Tim Bresnan would come in to England's starting XI should Tremlett be ruled out - but England skipper Andrew Strauss is confident he will recover in time.

"I think he is fine," Strauss said of Tremlett on Sky Sports News.

"He has just had a little niggle with his hammy (hamstring).

Fitness test

"He is getting a massage at the moment and will come out again to bowl later.

"At the moment we expect him to be fit for tomorrow but, like all these things, we'll have to see how he pulls up in the morning.

"You've always got to weigh these things in, it's a short turn-around between Test matches but we're not going to pick someone in the side unless we think he is 100 per cent fit and able to get through the full five days.

"We will take medical advice on that (but) he (Tremlett) seems very confident."

Strauss believes Bresnan would be a more than adequate replacement, should he be required.

"Tim Bresnan would bowl well in the conditions here," said the England skipper. "It usually helps the swing bowlers.

"He gives us something different to our armoury if needed."
