Lancashire missed the chance to go top of Division One of the LV County Championship as they collapsed to a 129-run defeat to Nottinghamshire.

Set a target of 258 at Southport, Lancashire resumed on the third morning on 8-0.

But Nottinghamshire's seam attack combined to skittle the Red Rose county for 128 by mid-afternoon.

Darren Pattinson finished with 5-44 and Andre Adams chipped in with 4-51 to complete his 10-wicket match haul. Luke Fletcher claimed the other wicket to fall.

Number three Karl Brown's 23 was the top score of Lancashire's second innings, which lasted only 50.1 overs in total.

Defending champions Nottinghamshire's fourth win of the season moves them up to fifth in the Division One table, while Lancashire remain in second place, two points behind leaders Durham.

Day two

Lancashire will have to make the highest score of the match in their second innings to claim victory over Nottinghamshire at Southport.

The ball continued to dominate on day two as the visitors again finished in the ascendancy against the title-chasing Red Rose county, despite veteran seamer Glen Chapple's heroics.

Former New Zealand seamer Andre Adams took 6-71 from 24 overs before lunch to bowl Lancashire out for a first-innings 179 in reply to 203.

And, having gained a lead of 24, Alex Hales and tail-ender Graeme White then scored the first two half-centuries of the match to help grind out 233 inside 65 second-innings overs.

Former Lancashire all-rounder Steven Mullaney also chipped in with a useful 42 but home skipper Chapple, who finished with 6-70 from 25.3 overs, was a key figure in reducing the visitors to 139-7 shortly after tea.

Mullaney and White shared a match-high partnership of 71 inside 18 overs on a deteriorating pitch and White (54 not out) reached his first fifty for Notts off 65 balls, after six of the top order fell playing loose shots.

Lancashire closed on eight without loss and will need to make 250 on Thursday for the victory that would take them top of the Division One table.

Day one

Lancashire twice failed to take advantage of potentially match-winning positions on day one of their Championship clash against Nottinghamshire.

The title-chasing hosts reduced Notts to 27-5 at Southport, then let them off the hook as they recovered to a semi-respectable 203 all out.

Lancashire then looked well set with the bat in reply after tea, thanks to a 67-run opening stand between Stephen Moore (37) and Paul Horton.

But Andre Adams struck three times in 15 balls - trapping Moore lbw and having Horton and Mark Chilton caught behind for the addition of one more run.

Darren Pattinson also bowled Karl Brown courtesy of an inside edge, as Lancashire closed on 86-4 from 32 overs.

Earlier, the in-form Kyle Hogg took 5-28 as Notts' top order failed to cope with his seam and swing.

But the Notts tail wagged to put on 134 runs for the last three wickets. Adams and Graeme White shared 65 for the eighth wicket and Pattinson (35 not out) and Luke Fletcher added 58 for the 10th.
