Twenty20 captain Cameron White has been dropped from Australia's one-day squad for next month's tour to Sri Lanka.

Although White will still lead the T20 side, there is no place for him in the party for the five 50-over matches.

James Pattinson, brother of one-cap England international Darren, is named in both squads, while the explosive Shaun Marsh returns after missing the World Cup through injury.

Former captain Ricky Ponting also takes his place in the 50-over squad, which will be captained by Michael Clarke.

"Taking on the talented Sri Lankan team on their home soil in all forms of the game is always challenging but we also see it as an exciting opportunity for both the Twenty20 and one-day squads," said chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.

"Cameron White is unlucky to be omitted from the one-day squad having been a regular and successful member of the squad for the last few series.

Confident

"Cameron lost his position in the side during the recent one-day tour of Bangladesh but the national selection panel is confident that he will force his way back into the team through weight of runs."

The T20 squad leaves Australia for two games on July 30, with the ODI squad meeting up on August 5.

Australia will then play three Tests, with the squad still be announced at a later date.

Australia Twenty20 squad: Cameron White (c), Shane Watson (vc), Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, John Hastings, David Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, Stephen O'Keefe, James Pattinson, Steven Smith, David Warner.

Australia ODI squad: Michael Clarke (c), Shane Watson (vc), Doug Bollinger, Xavier Doherty, Brad Haddin, John Hastings, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Ricky Ponting, Steven Smith.
