West Indian star Chris Gayle has signed to play for Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash League later this year.

The 31-year-old had played for Western Australia's Perth Scorchers in the last two renewals of the competition but has turned down a lucrative new deal, and the Sydney switch means he'll be reunited with former West Indies caoch John Dyson.

Thrilled

Gayle said: "I am thrilled to be able to come to Sydney and play for the Thunder. Having worked well with John Dyson in the West Indies, I was impressed with his plans for the Thunder and I think the team will have a great

chance to win this competition."

Meanwhile, the Scorchers were surpised by Gayle's decision to reject their contract offer.

"We presented Chris with a very generous offer, and his management indicated that if our contract terms were near enough to the amount he was chasing then his preference was to play for the Perth Scorchers," said WACA chief executive Graeme Wood.

"We have invested a great deal in Chris Gayle the past two years and he has forged some great friendships here in the west. We firmly believe that he has been very happy with the partnership.

"Chris only played two matches with the Warriors in 2009-10 and left the team early due to national commitments last summer, but we continued to support and do all that we could for him the past two seasons."

The Thunder have also signed opener David Warner, who has been a regular member of Australia's Twenty20 team for the past couple of years and was courted by a host of BBL clubs.
