Cusiter: Aiming to improve match fitness and get back into the Scotland set-up

Scotland scrum-half Chris Cusiter has flown to Australia in a bid to improve his match fitness ahead of the World Cup.

The 28-year-old will play up to four games for the Southern Districts club in Sydney, as he looks to push his way into the Scotland squad which sets off for New Zealand in September.

The former Perpignan star featured in just three Magners League games for Glasgow Warriors at the end of the season after being sidelined for nearly a year with a knee injury.

"I'm really excited about this. I really need to get more game time and look, ideally to be a sharp as I can, to be in with a chance of World Cup selection," he said.

"I've had three games back with Glasgow and need to work on my match fitness.

Experience

"The Sydney club rugby competition is very strong and hopefully I'll be able to play four games and learn a bit from the experience."

His short spell in Australia has been approved by both his club and country, with Scotland head coach Andy Robinson also supporting Cusiter's decision to get back to full fitness.

"I applaud Chris's initiative here," he said. "He is striving to be in the best physical and mental shape he can be and attuned to the intensity a scrum-half faces, with the challenges that lie ahead later this year at the Rugby World Cup."
