England World Cup winner Danny Grewcock is to retire at the end of the season, his club Bath have confirmed.

The veteran lock, who will turn 39 in June, won 69 caps for his country during a career that has spanned 15 years.

He started his career with hometown club Coventry before joining Saracens in 1998, with a move to Bath following in 2001.

Grewcock made 226 appearances for Bath and, as well as playing in one of the games during England's successful World Cup campaign in 2003, toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2001 and 2005.

"He has reached the highest level a player can, and should be very proud of his lengthy career."
Sir Ian McGeechan Quotes of the week

"I have been incredibly lucky to play for such a long time at such a great club," Grewcock said.

"I have enjoyed every minute of it, and have been very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to stay involved throughout."

Bath's director of rugby, Sir Ian McGeechan, added: "Danny is one of the most respected players in the game today, and will remain so even after his retirement.

"He has reached the highest level a player can, and should be very proud of his lengthy career."

Grewcock is to remain with Bath in a mentoring capacity, helping bring through the club's youth players.
