Kallis: Classy half-century
A classy half-century from Jacques Kallis and three wickets from Iqbal Abdulla ensured Kolkata Knight Riders claimed their first win of the new IPL campaign with a narrow victory over Deccan Chargers.
The Eden Gardens-based franchise successfully defended their 163-4 total as 2009 champions Deccan fell just nine runs short.
South Africa all-rounder Kallis set the tone at the top of the order with 53 from 47 balls after Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir had opted to bat first.
Kallis cracked seven fours and one almighty six and Gambhir, the highest-paid player in the tournament, made a quickfire 29 to help post a competitive target.
Deccan lost both openers early in the chase, however No.3 batsman Bharat Chipli reignited Deccan hopes with a counter-attacking 48 off 40 balls.
Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara (16) failed to build on a promising start and when Abdulla removed big-hitting duo JP Duminy (6) and Dan Christian (25), Deccan fell behind the eight ball.
A late rally left Deccan requiring 20 runs from Jaidev Unadket's last over of the match, however only 11 were picked up, leaving Kolkata to celebrate their first win of the campaign.
