"He is a strong boy mentally and he will come good."
Marcus Trescothick on Alastair Cook Quotes of the week

Opener Cook's place came under scrutiny when he went through a lean patch during the summer but he sealed his spot on the plane to Australia with a century against Pakistan at the Oval in August.

The 25-year-old, who has forged a strong opening partnership with Andrew Strauss since making his Test debut in 2006, only averages in the mid-20s against Australia.

"I have been away with Alastair for a bit. I know what he is like and he is certainly the type of person you want in your side," said Trescothick, whose own international career came to a premature end four years ago due to a stress-related illness.

"He gels people together and is a fantastic player. Form comes and goes but he'll bounce back.

"In an Ashes series you have to deal with a lot of pressure. It comes from the opposing players, the media and the public.

"He has to deal with it but he is a strong boy mentally and he will come good."

Opening statement

Cook and Strauss' failure to record an opening-50 stand was one of the reasons why the tourists fell to a humiliating 5-0 defeat Down Under in 2006/07.

"We need Cooky and Andrew Strauss playing well at the top of the order. That will be key to us winning the series," added Trescothick.

"If those two are there at lunch on the first day it will be an important sign for the series.

"The important thing for me is that we play positive cricket. Strauss needs to come out and play like he can and Cook has to come out and take it to them too.

"We need to set the tone and the tempo of the series right from the start."
