"I'm still catching my breath - it was awesome. It was very easy batting with Lasith Malinga."
Angelo Mathews Quotes of the week

Sri Lanka drew first blood in the three-match series in sensational style thanks to a record 132-run ninth-wicket partnership between Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga.

All-rounder Mathews clubbed a brilliant unbeaten 77 and Malinga made 56 - by far his highest score in ODIs - as Sri Lanka snatched the most unlikely of victories.

Speaking after the match, Sangakkara heaped praise on Mathews and Malinga, labelling the former as one of his prized assets.

Madness

"What a performance. We knew we had to fight for every run, there was a bit of madness out in the middle from our side but Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga were unbelievable," he said.

"One of the greatest assets we've had over the last couple of years is Angelo Mathews. He can bowl, he can bat, he's won us games in Twenty20 cricket and one-day cricket.

"He's only 23 so he's got a long way to go and we're just happy to have him in our side.

"Starting off with a win is great and we will enjoy this night but there is a lot of hard work to do ahead of (the second ODI in) Sydney (on Friday)."

Mathews added: "I'm still catching my breath - it was awesome. It was very easy batting with Lasith Malinga."
