Paul Nixon Quotes of the week

The 40-year-old, part of the first-team squad at Grace Road since 1987, has signed a one-year deal.

Nixon, who played mainly as a specialist batsman last season, averages 34.70 in first-class cricket and played 19 one-day internationals and one T20 for England in 2007.

Leicestershire are looking to stabilise following a turbulent campaign that saw the county riven by internal strife as chairman Neil Davidson, chief executive David Smith and coach Tim Boon all leaving.

The Foxes also missed out on promotion in the LV County Championship in former England seamer Matthew Hoggard's first season as captain.

Delighted

"I am absolutely delighted to sign a new deal with the club and I can honestly say that I am as excited now as when I started my professional career in 1987," he told county's official website.

"After winning seven Championship games last season, we feel we can push on and are desperate to reach Division One status.

"We have a good squad here and the youngsters give us that freshness. It's important to have a nice balance of youth and experience and that's why I am pleased to sign on again.

"Everyone has been through a lot over the last few months but the players did their talking on the pitch as we put in a lot of good performances last season.

"We have lots of exciting talent coming through and it is great to be a part of that. I'd like to thank Leicestershire CCC for their continued belief in me and everyone is already looking forward with relish."

Meanwhile, Leicestershire have also agreed a new one-year contract with seam bowler Nadeem Malik.
