Northamptonshire Steelbacks kept their Friends Provident t20 quarter-final hopes alive with an impressive 11-run victory over Lancashire Lightning at Wantage Road.

These two North Group outfits put on a real show in front of the Sky Sports cameras, Northants just managing to defend a total of 170-4 under their brand new floodlights.

Aggressive opening batsman Rob White was the star of the show, his 58-ball innings of 80 setting Northants on their way to a competitive total.

He and Sri Lankan overseas recruit Chaminda Vaas (29 off 28) put on 77 for the first wicket before left-arm spinner Stephen Parry (2-29) brought Lancashire back into the game.

He dismissed Vaas and David Sales (2) in quick succession, but White continued to find the boundary regularly.

Stunning

He eventually departed with the score on 138, however lusty late hitting from Elton Chigumbura (16 off 9) saw Northants up to 170-4.

Lancashire lost openers Stephen Moore (9) and Tom Smith (16) early in the piece, however Steven Croft (24 off 20) and Paul Horton (25 off 29) reignited the chase well.

The turning point came in the 14th over when Alex Wakely held a stunning one-handed catch on the long-on boundary to dismiss Horton.

James Middlebrook (2-17) followed up that wicket with the scalp of Mark Chilton, and despite Gareth Cross' brisk unbeaten 41 at the death, Lancashire fell short.

Already-qualified Lancashire now seem unlikely to gain a home quarter-final tie, while Northants are lurking just one-point behind fourth-placed Derbyshire, who they play on Friday night.
