Captain Andrew Strauss lavished praise on Man of the Match Eoin Morgan after his century saw England win their ODI opener against Australia.

"I think I try to keep things quite simple and it's easy to do when you're in good nick - it came off today, so happy days."
Eoin Morgan Quotes of the week

Morgan made an unbeaten 103 off 85 balls and fittingly brought up his century when hitting the winning boundary as England won by four wickets at the Rose Bowl.

Michael Clarke hit 87 not out, his best one-day score against England, as Australia made a challenging total of 267-7 after winning the toss.

England did struggle at one stage in their response, but Morgan showed his brilliant one-day form to lead the hosts home with four overs to spare.

"What a fantastic innings from Eoin Morgan - that was one of the best I've seen," said Strauss.

Work to do

"Halfway through our innings it looked like we had some hard work to do. I think we always felt that 267 was very chaseable on that wicket.

"He's playing that finishing role, but he's also playing a very, very aggressive finishing role," the skipper added.

"That's causing some headaches for opposition captains, which is encouraging to see and the great thing is he's doing it consistently.

"Hopefully there are some more big innings to come."

Dublin-born Morgan was named Man of the Match for his display and was thrilled with his performance, after only last month being one of the stars of England's victorious World Twenty20 campaign.

Good nick

"I've been in good nick for a while now and I want to play more cricket to take advantage of it," said the 23-year-old.

"I think I try to keep things quite simple and it's easy to do when you're in good nick - it came off today, so happy days."

Australia captain Ricky Ponting felt his side's total was below par.

"We managed things pretty well during the middle of our batting innings," said Ponting.

"That sort of total was probably a little bit shy - it was a great wicket and the outfield was very, very fast.

"The way he (Morgan) played tonight they deserved to win the game."
